Jesse has just finished interrogating an individual captured trying to steal an IFF transmitter from a corporate LEO vehicle. He gave up several names of other members of his cell, affiliated with Next, a radical AI liberation group responsible for a number of acts of violence. As watch officer, Jesse has the only copies of the interview datachips, and chemical amnesia for lower-ranking members of the interrogation team is standard operating procedure (to prevent infiltration).
One of the names was Priya's.
Background
Jesse served with the military out of HS - I'm imagining not the US, but some more post-national body. Say the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Basically, this was service in a number of hell-holes for about 5 years, suppressing populations that made trouble for European, Russian, or Chinese corporations.
Or Indian. I bet India is a corporate powerhouse, too.
Anyway, he returned home to CITY WE'RE IN, wanting to do some less brutal work, and ended up living in a MINER corp city, as police (I have no idea what MINER does, and Jesse doesn't much care - it's just like working for the city police)."
He ended up doing counter-terrorism work, which was under the corporate counter-espionage unit. He thought of it not as protecting MINER, but as protecting people in the area - and this is tied up with feeling protective about his family.
He's been promoted up, and is currently mid-level leadership with the city force. He's not quite as satisfied with it, since it's a lot more administrative, and requires lots of long nights poring over stats and such, but it pays well and let him move his family into the arcology.
Things haven't been great at home, recently, though. Between work and everything, he and Priya have just been sort of... drifting. They've been sleeping apart, and arguing more... it's been going on a while. So, he stays up late and reads, or downloads bootleg programs for info chips, or goes out drinking... and eventually decided to get himself a "companion."
By the way - "Doch" is, as near as I can tell, "Daughter" in Russian. "Doch's Row" is a notorious brothel district catering to the SCO troops in Grozny. It's in "Interface" b/c Jesse first encountered companions with illegal AI mods there. There, it was used to make robots that would more convincingly debase themselves - which he found appalling (but indulged in). He had vaguely nicer ideas about Lydia, but knew deep down that he was messing with things that weren't quite right.
