Steph and I created FiranMUX in 1998 and it remains in operation today. Firan is a text-based virtual world and role-playing game where players play characters who live in a city in a fantasy world set in a fictional Bronze Age. It has the feel of Classic Rome but without Rome and Europe and stuff but it also has magic, bigger-than-life deities, mythical beasts like dragons and hydrae, and grotesque humanoid enemies.

Game play centers around social interaction in the capital city of Anarinuell, where the leaders of the eight clans each rule a walled district. Politics, romance, and intrigue are the mainstay of daily life, but action, adventure, and combat are part of the game, too.

Check out FiranMUX's home page for more details about what the game is and how you can join.

In the early days, I held the role of game designer and software architect. I designed or oversaw many core systems and laid the foundation for complex systems that underpin the game. I also did a lot of recruiting for staff, pushing the game like a street corner drug dealer.

Nowadays I still have a hand in the game systems, but my I've delegated a lot of responsibility for day-to-day stuff to trusted staff. I manage the senior staff, watch over game finances (it costs a good deal of money to host a large game), keep an eye on technical concerns like hosting and our information strategy, and occasionally do a bit of coding.
